What was I supposed to do now? I didn’t even have the chance to run. They were right out there. I was trapped. How could this happen? This was supposed to be a great weekend away with the girls. And here I was scared out of my mind.
Instead of my curling in a ball and waiting for whatever was about to happened I decided to fight. I don’t know what washed over me but it wasn’t fear, it was anger. Like a burning ball of fire in my chest pushing its way to through. I could feel the heat burning through my skin. My face tensed into a face that even I wouldn’t want to see of myself. A mixture of fury and fear coming together. This was fight or flight and the flight had been taken away.
Before I thought about it, I was stomping heavy footed up the stair case towards the bedrooms. There looked to be three rooms with the doors closed all of the same side of the second story. From the top of the staircase was an old carpet runner covering exposed floor boards. There was a window at the far end of the walkway that I assumed overlooked the front yard of the house. It was warmer up there but much dustier.
I had a quick look through the window and headed back to the rooms. I didn’t knock. Why would I? It was the furthest from the top of the stairs and small. It was just a single bed and a small set of draws. Nothing or no one in there. As was the same for the second bedroom. I approached the bedroom closest to the top of the steps. Something about that room gave me a chill that ran down the back of my neck. I could feel something wasn’t right. There was someone in there, I just knew it. And with that sudden thought, my bravery dwindled into the place it had risen from for the briefest moment. I held my hand to the door knob trying to coax myself to open it.
This won’t end until you know! Open it, turn the handle!
I was so torn as to what to do and stood there for a small while, hand on and off the handle. I pressed my fingers around the knob and slowly started to turn it but stopped when I heard footsteps running towards the door. It was more than one set of feet. I panicked and ran for the stairs but my foot caught on the carpet and I fell violently down the steps one by one in slow motion, slow enough to see the knives sticking up from the bottom of the stairs. I was heading straight for them and just as I was about to land on them I felt a hand on my arm gripping so hard while a voice was calling my name in panic.
“Maddie! Maddie! Wake up girl!” it said.
I was jolted to reality, sweating and my heart pounding in my throat. I was disorientated as the face in front of me became clear. It was Nat and behind her was the familiar face of Kayla. Both were looking at me with a look of concern.
“Maddie are you ok? That must’ve been some dream you were having. You were throwing yourself around like something I’ve never seen before.” Nat said in a motherly voice, all worried and running her hand down my arm for comfort.
“Wow girl, you scared the shit out of us.” Was all Kayla could say,
“I’m fine. I just need my heart rate to settle. Wait! What are you doing here? Did you get the car fixed?”
The girls looked at me like I was crazy. “Oh! The dream. I dreamt you guys weren’t coming and Nat’s car had broken down. You know what? I don’t want to relive it. Can we just leave here please and stay somewhere else if we can? Anywhere but here.” I asked looking around the old dusty homestead.
I had been asleep on the sheet covered lounge and sat up to leave. I walked to the foot of the rickety old stairs to where my bag lay and picked it up and there in the dusty floor boards was written one word,
‘BYE’
