Even as a child I didn’t like to be without company. I would always be surrounded by people or at least one friend to keep me from feeling alone. Tonight wasn’t any different.
The plan wasn’t to be left here stranded in this old house in the middle of nowhere but my friends Nat and Kayla had broken down half way through their road trip. The original idea was to enjoy a girls weekend away staying at this homestead in The Hunter Valley, visiting wineries and maybe see a live band at an old country pub. But that all went out the window when Nat’s car decided to die. By the time they got to a phone because there was no reception it was already dark. I immediately regretted making the decision to get dropped off by my uncle who was passing through. How would I get home?
It wasn’t the fact that the homestead I was staying in was run down and looked like something out of a scary movie with its dowdy grey décor. Or even that the house stood on an old vineyard that was fenced off by dead grape vines that now looked like brown crusty walls of dust. The grass grew in patches that led up to a very old rickety veranda that I wasn’t sure would hold the weight of a small child let alone three ladies attempting to enjoy a few wines. It wasn’t even the front door screamed in pain as I opened it up to reveal a debilitated staircase that led to what I assumed was the bedrooms. There wasn’t a chance in hell I was going up there alone so I placed my bag at the foot of the stairs and continued to explore the place.
To the left was the kitchen and to the right was a large sitting area with sheets covering the furniture. The little light that escaped the shades on the windows into the room revealed dust particles that shimmered as they floated around my face. My sinuses were begging for mercy and that’s why I decided to open the windows. A choice I would regret later.
Not even even the floorboards that creaked under my feet as I toured the old homestead or the whistle that I heard as the wind travelled through the trees. It wasn’t the dry rustling of the dead grape vine leaves. No, it wasn’t these things.
It was the whispers!!
It wasn’t constant but it was often. Light whispers in conversation hidden behind the walls. I tried to block it out and tell myself it was my imagination playing tricks, but I knew better.
I didn’t know what I was supposed to do so I chose to sit lightly on the sheet covered lounge and that when I heard it. A door slam upstairs. I was terrified. I ran to the bottom of the stairs to grab my bag but it was gone. Instead all that I could see, in place of my belongings, written in the dust was one word..
‘RUN!’
